Types & Functions of Lighting
Lighting is one of the design elements that we feel are often overlooked. Having the wrong type of lighting could potentially break the entire design, regardless how good the aesthetics might be. Understanding the light conditions and where to strategically place lighting is key. Lighting can be divided into 2 types - Natural and Artificial Lighting.
Natural Lighting
Natural lighting, as the name suggest comes from sunlight. The amount of sunlight entering a room depends on the direction which the windows or openings are facing.
Directions
East-facing : Dominant morning sun.
West-facing : Low angle direct evening sunlight.
South-facing : Get’s natural light for most of the day.
North-facing : Least natural light.
Artificial Lighting
Artificial lighting comes from lighting products and are divided into 3 types.
Ambient Lights
Ambient lightings provide overall illumination to an area. Ceiling / wall-mounted light fixtures can be used to create ambient lights.
Task Lights
For specific task and activities (e.g. reading, cooking). It should be free from distracting glare but bright enough to be used without ambient light.
Accent Lights
Concentrated focus of light to create a visual point of interest. It is typically used to highlight architectural features, paintings, plants etc.
